talesin: "that was a joke!"
I know, but I felt it deserved a serious answer because I respect Wiccan and Pagan beliefs.
in the course of my continuing research on why believers insist that atheists are religious, i stumbled upon a website (link below) that proves beyond any doubt that atheism is a religion.
you can imagine my chagrin upon discovering that i, as an atheist, belong to a religion after all.
i'm not exactly a member in good standing yet, but i'll work on it as hard as i can.

glenster: " I start with a basic definition [of] atheism as re jection of belief in God or gods. "
Your statement is correct, but I think this kind of statement is what gets believers confused about atheism. Believers reason that to reject something, there must be a something to reject, and they conclude that atheists secretly believe in God but outwardly say they don't. They miss the part about rejection of BELIEF in God. Atheists reject belief in God, a stance that in no way implies the existence of God.

JO: " Can you be an atheist who's sceptical about natural selection as the mechanism of evolution? "
Absolutely. I no more accept evolution as an article of faith than I do the existence of God. Skeptics keep their minds open to new ideas. I do think evolution as a working hypothesis is extremely plausible, but I do not "believe" in it.
talesin: " Shocked! Please do not lump us all together. "
My apologies, talesin. It is indeed possible to be an atheist and a wiccan and/or pagan, and a Buddhist for that matter. I debated with myself for a long time about Wicca, as it is a beautiful way to honor the earth, but decided that plain old atheism was enough for me.
Blessed be!

JO: " Richard Dawkins shows 'religious' zeal for his cause, spreading his message as a Christian preacher might. I'm not trying to run Dawkins down, but we must admit he has an almost religious fervour."
Must we? Again, if zealousness is the mark of a religious person, then PETA must be a religion too. And Greenpeace, the NRA, and the KKK as well.
JO: "I see religiousness as being actions and practices ... "
Religion is actions and practices, but they are based on belief, faith, and doctrine. Atheism is based on skepticism and testable hypotheses, one of which is the existence of the FSM. No wait ... that can't be tested. It must be accepted on faith. Oh well, then ....
everyone knows a conspiracy theorist (let's face it we have a few on this board).
my attention has been to drawn to an article in the new york times, which i have pasted below.
apparently people with propensity to create conspiracy theory narratives are quite sane, even though they may have low self worth and cannot fully ascertain their place in the world.
There are more conspiracy theorists in the U.S. than Canada because aliens don't like long cold winters. Duh!

JO: " I think the religious reaction is from the person more from what they believe. "
If foaming-at-the-mouth hysteria is the hallmark of a true-blue religious person, then nearly everyone is an atheist. Or at least a member of the Chruch of the FSM. May his noodles never dry out.

The religion is called Pastafarianism. The link will explain it all.
How can I apologize to all those posters who have insisted all along that atheism is a religion?
I guess I can't.
